Today, in honour of International Women's Day, Rarities pays tribute to a handful of its favourite female singer-songwriters. International Women's Day is a global day celebrating the economic, political and social achievements of women past, present and future. It honours the work of the Suffragettes (those who campaigned for women's right to vote), celebrates women's success, and reminds the world of inequities that still need to be redressed. gemma hayes - oliver [simple yet beautiful song by this under appreciated irish singer songwriter. i kind of lost touch with her music over the past year, but word from her twitter page is that she is recording a new album as we speak. this gorgeous track was actually taken from a summer EP under the same name.] http://feeds.feedburner.com/Wo ngiesMusicWorld

The performance will feature songs from the Meteor Award winner's forthcoming fourth album, which is due in the new year. Support on the night will come from Ann Scott . Irish songstress Gemma Hayes is writing songs for her follow up to the fine, if vastly unappreciated, 2008 indie album The Hollow of Morning with the hope of releasing it later this year. The '03 Mercury Prize-nominated performer also released a digital only EP this past spring -- and we have the self-described "intense" title track video. Sometimes, as here, simple works. This guy Oliver's clearly a huge jerk. He kicked a hole through Irish singer-songwriter Gemma Hayes' heart, he ripped the smile off her face, and as you can see in this video, just got her way way down. Oliver and Annie's "Anthonio" should start some sort of "D-bags Who've Had Songs Written About Them" support group, and stay away from our artists. "Oliver" appears on Gemma Hayes' Oliver EP, out now. Thanks to Galway reader Clare for the tip.
