Tuesday, June 14, 2011 Today's Quick Mention: Tonight you can either buy all the weed in the world and attend Widespread Panic at ACL Live, or you can head on over to a theater for Woody Allen's Midnight In Paris. You'll dig it. I promise. I don't know why, but it's weird to me that She And Him went from being a cute project to full on indie powerhouse. Sure, their success makes sense, as there's plenty of talent to [...]

Strap yourselves in. Here are the best ten tracks of 2010 (apart from the ones I forgot). 10. It Is Not Meant To Be - Tame Impala In all honesty, I don't have a hope in hell... OMG sonic masterpiece from Australians (what is in the water there lately?). The album, Innerspeaker, is a magnificently coherent slice of psychedelic modern pop and this track manages to be sonically innovative while spelling out a few home truths. Well done [...]
I LOVE music videos. I enjoy when two senses can combine to create something new: better than the two parts. I prefer videos that have music in them. I'm tired of Stop-Motion. I want to understand them without needing sixteen mixtures of illegal substances. I'd like them to be less than 10 minutes. I'd like [...]
Considering the caliber of artistry here, some of them are major disappointments, while others were simply predictable, but failed to deliver on the off-chance hope that it could have been better. 2010 saw its fair share of brilliantly produced and well-crafted records. Some of these came by surprise, with little anticipation. Others that were projected to be highlights fell completely flat, defying all expectation of greatness and proving that even the best musical craftsmen can deliver a dud now and again. The disappointing album is a difficult topic to broach, especially considering the degree of expectation from one listener [...]

Filed under: The Hit List From the screech of chalk on a blackboard to crummy cafeteria food and uncomfortable metal desks, nothing inspires nostalgia (and/or fear and loathing) like the signifiers of high school days gone by -- which is precisely why so many artists have shot music videos in these hallowed halls of learning. So here's our guide to the top 10 music videos about [...]
The Pop Five is a series of Pop Candy readers' top five lists. Today's contribution comes from Andrew M. in Rochester, N.Y.:
This past weekend, bands of all shapes, sizes, and most importantly SOUNDS came together in the middle of nowhere, also known as rural Manchester, Tennessee. Buzznet wants to know - which Bonnaroo band has the swagger, style, and sound that best represents who YOU are?
Zooey Deschanel is a true indie Queen. Having starred in several independent films and the deliciously obscure TV series Tin Man , it only makes sense that she is one half of the delightful She and Him who have released their second album, Volume 2 . The band, made up of Deschanel and Mark Ward began as a one-off, non-committed band, but they seemed to mesh so well that decided to become an authentic touring and song writing band. The album is a step forward from their first, as all second albums should be. [...]
She & Him is one of pops finest collaborations, with all songs written by Zooey Deschanel (She) and produced by M Ward (Him). Described by Zooey as a feel-good album, Volume Two is bolstered by rich harmonies and sweet-as-sugar melodies it simply shimmers from start to finish. Today marks the release of She & Him's second album, the aptly titled Volume 2 and you can stream the entire album for free on [...]
She & Him . Volume 2 ( Escuchar )
M. Ward has been busy again and released another She & Him album with Zooey Deschanel (yes, the actress). If the video for In The Sun is any sign, the album should be quite fun.
Zooey Deschanel and M. Ward return on March 23 with their follow up album, the aptly titled Volume Two . "In The Sun", which is the first single off the album, is so delightfully twee and cute and reminds me of 500 Days of Summer (great movie, by the way). I hope the rest of the record will be as sugary-sweet as this song. Download: She & Him - In The Sun [buy Volume Two ] She & Him - Why Do You Let Me [...]
[Off to SXSW soon — I'm warmed up, and some local bands are getting there too ...] Their sophomore album "Volume Two" comes out March 23, and She & Him — that's Zooey Deschanel and M. Ward, if you don't remember them from the Paste magazine cover, and that's their video for their rather saccharine pop ditty "In the Sun," above — get ready to take on Austin by playing a show at Largo. ... L.A.'s Andy Clockwise is SXSW-bound too, and he prepares with a headlining date [...]

In The Sun, the first single from Volume Two (featuring guest vocals from Tilly and the Wall) will be released digitally on March 29th, along with a cover of the Beach Boys' I Can Hear Music.
The music of She & Him is made of sweet sounds and simpler times. It's not a copy of vintage rock 'n' roll / pop, but a new school take on it. The clean, flawless production is an anachronism for this style of music; just like the library entrance censors, M. Ward's Blackberry, and that bro w/the blue neck-er-chief don't really fit into the video. I'm pretty sure choreography wasn't allowed in
