I have to admit that I wasn't planning to watch Horrible Bosses, but I do love Jason Bateman (did anyone else watch It's Your Move way back when?) so I thought it might not be the worst thing I could do to end a perfect lazy Sunday. While there were parts of the movie during [...]

By the beating of the drums, something wicked this way comes. One of the decade's most restlessly original bands made their play for the brass ring here, and grabbed it firmly with two hands. With drummer Jim Eno manipulating rhythm like soft clay, singer/songwriter/resident genius Britt Daniel shows his full arsenal, from wryly sinister ("Don't Make Me a Target") to enticingly obscure ("The Ghost of You Lingers") to full-bore radio ecstasy ("The Underdog") with horns! It plays out like the most spectacular highwire act, but what the audience doesn't know is that this cat can fly. [...]

Tuesday, June 30, 2009 Today's Quick Mention: I know it's almost a week old (or as the internet would say, ancient), but have you guys seen the 6.7 review of Pitchfork over at Pop Sense? I honestly think that it might be one of the best, most honest pieces I've ever read. You have to check it out. Spoon and I have this weird relationship where I can't ever guess how they'll tweak their sound from record to record, and they never [...]
We love that Spoon chose Portland for their one-off gig Friday night in order to try out some new songs. We're just not thrilled they played to a sold-out crowd at the Crystal Ballroom, where consistently atrocious acoustics produced...

I saw "Cloverfield" this weekend, and it was a'ight. Two things struck me, though. 1) My plan of fleeing the island via the subway tunnels should some monster attack the island is totally valid. (yes, I imagined and mentally prepared for this scenario way before this movie came out. I'm weird.) Just, when you see all the rats running one way, don't stop to look at what they're running from, book it in the obvious right direction. 2) Young professionals in Manhattan like good music. (But possibly should be punished for it? The [...]
Hey, look! It's the Spoon bandwagon coming down the road! Wait, hold on, out of my way! Ouch. Jerk! Let me on! Let me on! *runs along side, and jumps on the bandwagon* It all started when I heard Spoon's single, "The Underdog", from their new album, Ga Ga Ga Ga .There's a catchy and shall I say, summery-ness about it (even though I'm stuck in 110 degree desert hell, so summer isn't pleasant like it should be). But I can enjoy a good summer song in the car with the AC cranked, or in a friend's [...]
Nothing's changed here, folks; Spoon 's new album Ga Ga Ga Ga Ga is bursting at the seams with solid offerings from a band who's been doing their thing for over a decade, and doing it well. I've been digging these guys since A Series of Sneaks (circa '98) and could never understand why almost nobody had heard of them, but all signs point to this being the Summer of Spoon. The first single from the July 10th release is ' The Underdog ', an upbeat Paul Simonesque rock/pop glory complete [...]
Release Date: 10 July 2007 ( Merge ) For their sixth studio release, Spoon has created another music gem. With strong dynamics, the songs can volley from sparse to layered arrangements. Instruments can drop out, but the melodies and rhythms stay intact. Some songs are played with a similar style to previous Spoon tracks, while other moments on the album sound like the band is reinventing itself. Throughout the ten tracks of Ga Ga Ga Ga Ga the band presents its miraculously mesmerizing indie pop. [...]
Austin band's sixth LP is its most groove-oriented effort since 2001's Girls Can Tell , an efficient rhythm machine with a sinuous palate.
