Posted in Play-This-List Soundbite Goodbye 2011, it was a year that flew by way too fast, and it was also the year that I truly felt overwhelmed by the amount of music available in all shapes and forms. This post highlights the albums & EPs that we've enjoyed the most over the past year, there's a lot of albums [...]

Jay-Z and Kanye West's Watch the Throne Music, music, music. 2011 satisfied our wants and needs, and now have us looking impatiently towards the future for what 2012 will hold. From boastful bragging rights, to beautiful, American journeys, and the pains of unrequited love, this year served us a heaping plate of hip hop, folk, indie and everything in between. Are you curious as to who made it on our list? Of course you are, so steady that clicking finger, breath easily and brace yourselves: here are our top selections of 2011. 1. Jay-Z [...]

Music bloggers love lists and regrettably, I’m not different. So to give the year some closure, it’s only right if I list off my favourite musical moments of the calendar year. I’ll start off with my 15 Favourite Albums of 2011 and then in a couple days time I’ll put up my 25 Favourite Songs of 2011 . Just to reiterate, this is merely my humble opinion; nothing more, nothing less. I’ve only got one set of ears and simply can’t listen to all the excellent music to justify any hyperbolic claims. The over-saturation of the online musical scene makes [...]

10- R.E.M. - Collapse into now " I'll give it one more time, I'll show the kids how to do it fine ". E assim eles fizeram. Collapse into now é a última lição do R.E.M. Toda a carreira do R.E.M. é revisitada, de alguma maneira, em [...]

What is left to say about Adele Adkins’s second album that hasn’t already been said? It sat at the top of the UK albums sales chart for a third of the year, has stayed in the top 10 for the rest of it, bagged 13 weeks in the US at number 1 and has been number 1 in pretty much every country that has a sales chart; only Hungary (no.11), Japan (no.53), Argentina (no.8),Russia (no.9), Mexico (no.4) and Spain (no.2) not fully succumbing to the charms of 21 . It’s a phenomenal success story, particularly in an [...]
Adele, "Rolling In The Deep" It was astonishingly ubiquitous (okay, overplayed), but every time I hear this I'm still astonished at how good it is. Adele's voice finds its perfect showcase, hitting pleading high notes and low, dirty growls. "You're gonna wish you / Never had met me," the backup singers chirp ominously, as the kick [...]

Welcome yet again to the Prefix Power Rankings, where we take a look at who's the hottest in any given genre. Today, we look at perhaps the most important classification of musician around: female R&B singers. I really, really like R&B. I wrote about male R&B singers last month , and I'm writing about lady R&B singers this month. I'd write about intersex R&B singers next month, but the only one I could talk about is Antony, and depending on the day he doesn't sound like R&B at all. Anyways, there are several [...]
As summer nears its sputtering end, the time seems right for our annual rite of passage: I will listen to all of Billboard's Top 40 pop songs consecutively, counting down from 40 to 1. A wise young prince once said ... Continue reading
Katy Perry took the big prize and Lady Gaga turned up dressed as a leather clad bloke, but it was Beyonce who stole the headlines at last night's VMAs by revealing that her and husband Jay-Z are expecting their first child. The winners were: Pop Music Video: Britney Spears, Till the World Ends. Rock video: Foo Fighters, Walk. Hip-hop video: Nicki Minaj, Super Bass. Collaboration: Katy Perry featuring Kanye West, E.T. Male video: Justin Bieber, U Smile. Female [...]

Some call it the "Oscars for youth," but realistically, the MTV Video Music Awards (VMAs) feel more like crack for gossipers. Controversy! Chaos! Glam! Anything can happen. It used to be waiting anxiously for Madonna's next "big move," whether it was her flashing some ass or offering some tongue. (Gross? Hardly.) Nowadays, it's more about who's going to screw up, what will be the grand upset, and, admittedly, who's going to be the next "Kanye." Keywords, people: sex and drama. But that's always been the case with the VMAs. Wait, you don't actually think it's a special award? [...]

ARCTIC MONKEYS, THE VACCINES ( Crystal Ballroom , 1332 W Burnside) Following their sudden, meteoric rise in the mid-'00s, Sheffield, England's Arctic Monkeys have matured into that rarest of things: a radio rock band whose songs are neither stupid nor sappy. They're not teens anymore, but their music still swings with plenty of youthful energy. NED LANNAMANN CANDY CLAWS, AAN, DESERT NOISES ( Mississippi Studios , 3939 N Mississippi) The lilting exotica of Candy [...]

The MTV Video Music Award nominations were announced last night by everybody's favorite planking mermaid, Katy Perry, who scored big by being nominated nine times for four different videos — "E.T.," "Firework," "Last Friday Night," and "Teenage Dream" (the last of which was nominated for Best Cinematography). Not too shabby! Kanye West was the leader of the pack with 11 nominations, though unlike Katy, he missed out on a nod for the top prize, Video of the Year. In case your memory is rusty or you [...]
Last night I saw Patti Smith for the umpteenth time, and, for the umpteenth time, she was amazing.

Yesterday the original version of 'Rolling in the Deep' by Adele came on the radio and it stimulated a conversation with my companion about how long it will take before people are tired of hearing this song, and when radio stations will decide to stop playing it. Then I heard this awesome house remix by Nicademass , with an old school feel that I thought you might appreciate. Click here to download the remix
