I barely watch music videos to be honest, but of the few I've seen I guess they've been good enough to warrant some consideration as the top videos of the year. Anyway here are my choices but I do warn that I probably haven't seen a lot of good ones. 5. Old Prince Still Lives At Home by Shad What more can I say about this video? Instead of Fresh Prince of Bel Air, you have the Old Prince of London, Ontario. It's a funny parody that comes from a simple idea [...]
We here at TouchExplode support this video and send our best to those still living at home.
Canadian rapper Shad (Shadrach Kabango) exploded on the scene recently with both Polaris Music Prize and Juno Award nomnations for his sophomore effort The Old Prince (technically released last year but just getting on most people's radars in 2008). Though the Canadian music scene may primarily be known for creating some of the best "Indie Rock" of the past decade, if The Old Prince is any indicator, a burgeoning Hip Hop movement may also be in the cards. The intro track Quest for Glory loosely outlines [...]

The current Canadian Hip Hop scene seems to have a particular love for 1990, and really, I can't blame 'em. 1990 was a bright, colourful and fun year, just before the brooding Seattle grunge scene took over. Two particular Canadian rappers have embraced 1990 and spun it with their own fresh style. The Old Prince (2007) Shad has fully embraced 1990 with his recent video The Old Prince Still Lives at Home . The video is is a full re-enactment of the opening sequence to [...]
Her er tre nye videoer fra hhv. Ben Folds, Mimas og Shad, som alle er mere interessante end sidste uges "Ugens Video". (more...)

In just 8 hours Canada's 2008 Polaris Music Prize winner will be announced, however, this year seems to be a mixture of relatively unknown artists in comparison to last year's nominated Arcade Fire and Feist (who lost to Patrick Watson ). Of course there is Stars , but personally speaking I don't believe that In Our Bedroom After the War is stronger than Set Yourself On Fire which is enough to keep the gold out of their hands. My vote is running for Holy [...]

by BrooklynVegan Mike The time has arrived to crown another Polaris Music Prize winner. Last year's Canadian award was met with mixed response as relative unknowns (outside of Canada) Patrick Watson beat Arcade Fire , Feist ( my pick to win ), and seven others for the top spot. This is the most open field in the brief history of the award. There are no big acts, though Stars certainly has [...]

Wednesday night at the Mod Club marked the beginning of Toronto's annual Manifesto Festival . Each year, hip hop, R&B, Soul and Funk artists gather from all over the world to come and perform at various venues throughout our city. To kick it all off this year, local buzzed about rapper, Shad K played a headlining set from his new album, 'The Old Prince'. If you thought conscious hip hop was lost and dead, think again. This guy reminded me of the days when I used to [...]
Hailing from London, Ontario, Shad has surely made his mark in the Canadian Hip Hop scene, and in a relatively short time, too. Nominated for a Juno , short-listed for the 2008 Polaris prize , and nailing an awesome performance at this year's Virgin Festival are amongst just a few of his recent accomplishments. And to that nearly half a million views of his hilarious video for The Old Prince Still Lives at Home (below), which takes a long jab at the opening sequence [...]
Canadian rapper Shad cracked our butts up today with this scene-by-scene (almost) parody of the opening sequence to our favorite late '80s, early '90s after-school show The Fresh Prince of Bel Air . Shad - "The Old Prince Still Lives at Home" The final third has Shad stopping the video parody because he "couldn't afford the whole beat." The ensuing, lo-fi acapella ending is pretty great. By the way, this was discovered via the excellent hip-hop blog [...]
The Old Prince Still Lives At Home by Shad . Why does this look familiar? oh, right! The original song was so popular in my time that it became a camp song when I was 16. Great video though (by Hot Dog Gardage ), clever lyrics. Think this kid has a shot .
