Quickly becoming one of the years strongest festival line-ups, Beacons Festival - set in the stunning surroundings of the Yorkshire Dales - has once again come up trumps with its most varied and interesting rosters to-date. Although boasting a superb array of talent across the weekend (August 17th-19th), we've done our best to pick out what we believe will be this years highlights... Friday 17th Mount Kimbie In a real coup for the [...]

TMOT's top 5 albums of 2011, in no particular order 1. Bon Iver, Bon Iver Forget Emma, forget Kanye, forget the Grammys, forget the cabin in the woods. Jubilation is not apparent in Bon Iver, not at first. But how else could "Towers" be described? It's a gorgeous love song, and despite the occasionally unintelligible [...]
There was so much good music released in 2011 that I find it's actually hard to confine a list to the top 40. These are some of the albums that struck me as interesting, exciting or irresistible. I'll count down from 40 to 1 in two posts. 40. Bass Drum of Death - GB City: This is such a fun debut from two guys from Mississippi. It rocks hard. Young Pros - Bass Drum of Death 39. The Obits - Moody, Standard and Poor: Indie vet Rick Froberg plays [...]
"You never even tried to love me What did I have to do to make you want me? I feel so blind, I can't make out the passing road signs All that you would have me do is cross that County Line" Vamos então continuar a lista dos temas que mais me agradaram em 2011. Pela posição #31 os britânicos Metronomy com "Everything Goes My Way" seguidos de perto pelos norte-americanos YACHT com o seu
The elusive, silver-tongued Cass McCombs is coming to the Tractor Tavern tomorrow to color the night black with his unexpected brand of dark, beautiful tunes. Releasing two EPs this year, both showcasing different sides of off the wall humor and melodies that both raise the hair on your arms and lull you into a lush, [...]
Joe writes: This is lovely. Country Line reminds me of the mini Gram Parsons revivalist that was around in the nineties. Here are The Rockingbirds with Restless: Here are my two favourite Gram Parsons tracks, A Song For You and The Return Of The Grievous Angel, both featuring Emmylou Harris. I once put one or both of these tracks on a CD for a girl at my sixth form college, along with Bob Dylan, Joni Mitchell etc. She couldn't handle the country twang.

A lucky seven songs again: one for every miserable day of this miserable week. SOIWT 1, Rain 0. Pet - What You Building ( mp3 ) Despite being as downtrodden a song as you're ever likely to come across, this indie number from Edinburgh's Pet carries a strange, soulful beauty, cooking up magic from its miserable dwellings. "I cannot believe what I became" moans the singer; but you sense he's secretly quite taken with his decline. (via ABEANO ) Joker [...]

The man killed it on his recent trip through Portland. He's coming back for Music Fest NW and he recently released this sweet, lilting video for "County Line." It's deathly slow in terms of internet attention spans, but if you full-screen 'er and sit back the feeling will rush over you. [ Subscribe to the comments on this story ]

Brooklyn electronic duo Ford & Lopatin lead off the new entries this week with a track that borrows a very familiar beat from a very familiar long standing band that began in the 80s out of the ashes of the 70s. It won't take you long to get it - in fact the word instantaneously comes to mind. The track in question is Too Much MIDI (Please Forgive Me) and it comes off their debut album set to be released next week, Channel Pressure. It debuts at 20. Joining the former Games duo is the Michael Lee led L.A electronic [...]

I Can Smell The Columbine Cass McCombs released a self-directed video for "County Line," the standout track from his most recent album Wit's End (2011, Domino ). Unfortunately, neither the album nor the video( s ) can do justice to this song. One of the best tracks we've heard this year, "County Line" is achingly beautiful. Even after the 100th listen, it maintains - increases, even - the ability to break [...]
[mp3] Cass McCombs: "County Line" From Cass McCombs' recently released 'Wit's End' on Domino.
Cass McCombs’s "County Line" plays like a melancholy reflection on his home town—and maybe it is. But in his self-directed video for the song, he acts as both chronicler and interloper, crossing other people's county ... read more
