It seems when you allow a group of Canadian musicians (all highly accomplished on their own) to amalgamate into a band, you get the Voltron of indie/power pop. The REAL Pornographers I am sure that Canadian super-group The New Pornographers have a tough time coordinating schedules. That's the trouble with being ultra-productive and creative, I guess. Too many solo careers! Too many side projects! So when it comes to shooting a video for new material, why not pick a bunch of other celebrities who aren't actually in the band, but who also likely have insane schedules, and have them film a fake movie trailer for a made-up movie? The New Pornographers’ latest video “Moves,” directed by Tom Scharpling and featuring cameos from Todd Barry, John Oliver, John Hodgman and Donald Glover, among others, is a lot of fun. I haven’t been clued in to The New Pornographers - mainly the result of my own ignorance - but I’ll be paying closer attention in the future. It’s funny how one video or interview can really switch up a perception of a band or artist; knowing that a band has a sense of humor about themselves and their music makes all the difference in appreciating their work.
The New Pornographers have released a brilliant new video for ‘Moves’, the latest single to be taken from their fifth album, Together . Directed by Tom Scharpling ( Saturday Night Live, The Onion, Aqua Teen Hunger Force) the video features an all-star cast including the like of Paul Rudd (Anchorman, Knocked Up, The 40-Year-Old Virgin) , Kevin Corrigan (Goodfellas, Detroit Rock City, Buffalo 66) and Bill Hader (Superbad, Tropic Thunder, Adventureland) amongst a whole load of other comedians and musicians.
This is a great video — it's "Moves" by The New Pornographers, and it features a veritable cornucopia of comedy gold. Contributions from fellow Matadorian Jon Wurster and a slew of Daily Show members make this really enjoyable, and the "story" is just brilliant. It's nice to know that bands that barely have enough time to tour together CAN get together to film their own music video. It's nice to know that an awesome band can have a really a great sense of humor about themselves, as well famous friends who can fill and make a pretty sweet music video.
