Indie rockers The National have some serious geek cred going for them. Not only did they contribute some wonderful music to the video game Portal 2 , but now they've got a song, "The Rains of Castamere," in the second season of the HBO show Game of Thrones . With lyrics written by A Song Of Ice and Fire author George R.R. Martin , the song is not only incredbly story-relevent, but it's dark and foreboding mood perfectly fit the tone of the book and show. Take a listen below, and hear why winter is coming. [...]

V pondělí jsme mohli vidět předposlední devátý díl 2. série úspěšného fantasy seriálu The Game of Thrones (Hra o trůny) s názvem Blackwater. Po skončení této epizody resp. během závěrečných titulků zpívá Matt Berninger z Brooklynské kapely The National baladu The Rains of Castamere . "Deště Kastameru" oslavují drtivé vítězství Lorda Tywina Lannistera, který potlačil vzpouru rodu Reynů z Kastameru. Celý rod byl vzápětí nemilosrdně vyhlazen. Tato píseň se objevuje v mnoha důležitých momentech knižní ságy George R.R. Martina "A Song of Ice and [...]
Epic brooding horns FTW. The National's mournful 'The Rains of Castamere' appears on the Game Of Thrones season two soundtrack. The song appears as the credits roll in Episode 9 which was aired in the US last night. It was announced last week that Matt Berninger would also be doing narration for a kid's iPad app which the band will be scoring also.

We got a lotta love for The National here. They've been a little quiet of late though. But now they are kind of back with an appearance on the soundtrack of Game of Thrones. 'The Rains of Castomere' starts with Matt Berninger's deep rumble all alone before being joined by swelling horns and synths. No room for drums or guitar here folks. Game Of Thrones creator George R.R. Martin wrote the lyrics himself, with Berninger adding his baritone vocal to it.
In the Song of Ice and Fire series of books and HBO’s TV adaptation of them, Game of Thrones, lots of growly-voiced men drink heavily, often while talking about the macabre. On THE NATIONAL'S... Support indie media! Read the rest at thephoenix.com . . .

by Bill Pearis The National at Beacon Theater in 2011 ( more by Toby Tenenbaum ) The soundtrack to Game of Thones: Season 2 comes out June 16, a week after the S2 finale airs on HBO. It's mostly Ramin Djawadi's thunderous score, but does contain The National doing "The Rains of Castamere." This probably doesn't mean so much to people who have only watched the series, but those who have read the books know [...]

Brooklyn's The National have recorded a song for the Season 2 Game of Thrones soundtrack. Titled "The Rains of Castamere," the song is inspired by George R.R. Martin's beloved A Song of Ice and Fire series tells the story of Lord Tywin Lannister's brutal victory over the House Reyne of Castamere. As you might expect, the song eschews modern instrumentation in order to better fit in the medieval era of the novels.

For those of you who don't watch Game of Thrones , The National's new track should give you a good idea of what the show is all about. "The Rains of Castamere" is an orchestral slow-burn. A foreboding figure for string quartet anchors Matt Berninger's subdued baritone as he leads us through a cryptic, almost spoken narrative. Following the band's contribution to the Portal 2 soundtrack, it shouldn't surprise listeners to see them dig deeper into the fantasy world. The complete soundtrack is expected for release on June 19. Listen to the track on youtube:

It's been a little quiet on the scene regarding The National in recent months. On the other hand it's been rather noisy on HBO's hit show Game of Thrones , I won't spoil anything for anyone but I bloody hate Joffrey! Tyrion on the other hand, genius. The band must be pretty fond of the show too as they've contributed a song the Game of Thrones' season two soundtrack. Apparently the track was penned by the main man himself and the creator of GoT, George R.R. Martin himself! The lyrics [...]

It's always a good day when you get to hear some new music from The National , who released a song for HBO 's Game of Thrones called "The Rains of Castamere." Now I do not know much about the show or premise, but according to online Game of Thrones forums, the song is about the "violent dynastic struggles among the kingdom's noble families for control of the Iron Throne." You'll be able to find this tune on the season 2 soundtrack for the TV drama, but you can stream the track below [...]
The National have now added a song on The Game of Thrones, titled 'The Rains of Castamere' that is now a part of their resume. The National's front man Matt Berninger's voice works perfectly for this role on the shows soundtrack, it is a haunting tune that will keep you on the edge of your seat.
Just so we're clear. We now live in a world where The National (the epitome of literary indie rock emo for white people and I band I happen to enjoy in spite of that) have recorded the official ballad for "The Rains of Castamere", which, according to Topless Robot , is the "most famous song from George R.R. Martin's A Song of Ice and Fire series." The song was written about Lord Tywin Lannister's crushing victory over rebellious House Reyne of Castamere and the destruction of the House at the end of their rebellion. That took [...]

Indie Music Is Coming... to the Game of Thrones soundtrack. HBO is releasing a soundtrack for the show's second season, and who better to contribute to it than the indie-brooding, oft-melodramatic band The National!? "The Rains of Castamere," penned by series creator George R.R. Martin, is a sinister two and a half minutes with actual relevance to the plot of GoT (for ye non-bookreaders, the Lord of Castamere is Tywin Lannister). And Matt Berninger's baritone voice is perfect for such a grim, fantasy/medieval/mythic tale. Hear the track below:

The National have snuck up as one of favorite bands making music. Much of their material does require a few listens to grow on you, but once they got you, it's all fucking great. They've contributed a song entitled "The Rains Of Castamere" to the soundtrack for season two of the HBO hit series Game Of Thrones . It's dark. It's epic. It's what you expect from The National. THE NATIONAL - THE RAINS OF CASTAMERE
The National have written an epic oeuvre for The Game of Thrones , which will appear on the Season 2 soundtrack. Matt Berninger's rich, raspy voice provides that irresistible drama the band so masterfully creates, which is so fitting for the popular drama. According to Game Of Thrones' website forums, “The Rains of Castamere” is about the “violent dynastic struggles among the kingdom’s noble families for control of the Iron Throne.” Check it out above.

The only time I can remember anyone actually listening to music on Game Of Thrones was when (spoiler) that little asshole King Joffrey had a minstrel's tongue cut out for singing a song that made fun of him. But the awesome HBO show is still getting its own soundtrack, and that soundtrack has somehow found a way to make room for indie heroes the National. The band's contribution is the broody, orchestral "The Rains Of Castamere," and the lyrics actually have something to do with the plot. Game Of Thrones creator George R.R. Martin wrote the [...]
The National have contributed a song to the soundtrack for HBO's Game of Thrones , a series that I loved so much I had to buy all the books and skip ahead by five or six seasons. The National's rendition of in-story song "The Rains of Castamere", titled "Castamere" for The National's version, will play a particularly dramatic part in season 3 or season 4, depending on how the show writer's split up the third novel in the book series. Listen to The National's moody version (as most readers probably expected [...]

The National have unveiled new song 'The Rains Of Castamere', featured on the Game Of Thrones soundtrack. Vocally, it's vintage The National - with Matt Berninger's dulcet baritones taking centre-stage as the music is stripped back a bit. But lyrically, it's a whole different picture to anything off High Violet , taking on a conceptual feel fitting to the fantasy-medieval show. It's a short and sweet number but a touch subdued. You keep waiting for it to erupt into new realms of grandeur, but it never does. Give us Berninger [...]
