The greatest crime of grunge was drying up the shoegaze currents in the mid-late 90s. It's revival is less clear (despite the self-identified nu-gaze), shoegaze persists as 'space rock', 'dream pop,' 'psychedelic rock,' and 'experimental noise.' Shoegaze is not as tightly defined as other genres because it was a label given by journalists (NME, Melody Maker) to describe the pre-emo concert presence of certain bands.
