This week, an electro rock debut and music from Au. The debut album from Scotland's Errors is really multi-purpose: It's good for listening, dancing, and repeating. They're a dance rock band that's got a lot more going for them than a catchy beat. And some experimental pop from Portland's Au. The band continues to experiment with a lo-fi recording style, and their second album, Verbs , is all the better for it. The Needle Drop 07-12-08 Errors links: weareerrors.com [...]
On his fourth album, Feed the Animals , Gregg Gillis--a.k.a. Girl Talk--delves deeper into the hook-rich mashup style he formed on his previous album, Night Ripper . In an interview exclusive to The Needle Drop, Gillis talks about his music's popularity, progression, and influence. Interview For more info on Girl Talk, visit illegalart.net . Xiu Xiu is a band very very weird / strange for me. Yesterday I read about their controversial new video for the song "Master of the Bump" and ok.... first let me talk about the song. The first time I listen any song (an english one) I don't pay attention to the lyrics, just the melody. Even though that song was "ok".. the final note, a string guitar, gave me the chills. (minute 3:14 of the song ), a standout ovation for that ending. Now the video, it came to my attention [...]

Portland's Au--just pronounce it "eh, you"--is another band getting in line to redefine what it is to play pop music and record it yourself. There are elements of Mount Eerie, Animal Collective, Grizzly Bear, and the Ruby Suns strewn about in Au's recordings: grandiose group vocals, room ambiance, distant drums, and some well-executed crescendos. Despite all of these prevalent fringe elements, Luke Wyland--Au's founder and mastermind--still manages to make the music plenty catchy. These two tracks come from Au's latest album, Verbs , and they're a great example of the band's structural dynamics [...]

September is the Month of Mogwai. With a new EP, LP, and North American tour, it's going to be a loaded 30 days for the Glasgow quintet. This MP3 comes from the band's upcoming album, The Hawk Is Howling . It's a song that's, dare I say, catchy. "The Sun Smells Too Loud" follows the band's usual sound wall build, but a floor tom romp and crisp synths make the tune more attention-grabbing than meditative. The song sticks, but in a good way. And don't try to remove it, because it's just going to leave [...]
Few bands come together with such a reverence for sound dynamics, and are then able to translate that so well to a record. If there's a proper place to hear Grails' latest album, it's sitting in the middle of a harem, floating on a sea of satin throw pillows. Don't forget the hookah. Take Refuge can be listened to in other places, but trying to create a proper atmosphere with black lights and beanbag chairs will only lead to heartbreak. By today's standards, Grails could be categorized under "post-rock," but don't throw them in [...]
