Remembering The Seeds' Sky Saxon
The NYT reported Friday that Sky Saxon (born Richard Elvern Marsh), lead singer and bassist for LA psychedelic band, The Seeds , had left this mortal coil. His death was apparently due to heart failure and was "thought to be 71." Anyone with a Nuggets compilation is likely to have heard "Pushin' Too Hard" or "Can't Seem to Make You Mine" with the latter ditty featuring Sky's gruff warble and a trademark bent guitar lick. Apparently the celebrity death rule of threes is in force with MJ, Farrah and Sky all passing during the [...]

Night and Day
Not a good week to be an ill famous person it would seem. Whilst Jacko will no doubt hog the column inches and keep the internet's photoshoppers busy well into next week, I also wanted to pour my virtual 40 out on the curb for Sky Saxon from the truly badass The Seeds who has also passed away this week though to much less fanfare. Hopefully the next post will be slightly less death related.
Sky Saxon, R.I.P.
Sky Saxon, the founder of the garage band the Seeds, passed away Thursday morning at a hospital in Austin, Texas. Saxon founded the Seeds with Jan Savage, Daryl Hooper, and Rick Andridge in 1965; the band brushed the Top 40 with "Can't Seem To Make You Mine" (above), and hit No. 36 on the charts with "Pushin' Too Hard" in 1967. The Seeds broke up in 1970, but Saxon continued to make music, eventually distributing his music DIY-style online . After the jump, "Pushin' Too Hard." Saxon had [...]
The Seeds — Not Pushing Hard Enough?
Calling a musical act a 'one-hit wonder' is a pretty common occurrence and one that is usually meant as a mild put-down, but there have been some musicians who achieve a measure of popularity without quite reaching even that plateau. They might hit the charts for several songs and have some solid record sales, but are never quite able to get into the Top Ten. A good example would be a very good Sixties' group known as the Seeds, whose best-known song was "Pushin' Too Hard." The LA-based group came together in the mid-sixties when lead [...]

can't seem to make you mine
In reading up on the Black Lips , I came across multiple references to The Seeds , one of the Black Lips' biggest influences, and one of the originators of the psychedelic brand of garage/surf rock that has since been coined " flower punk ." My only previous exposure to the Seeds was the appearance of their hit " Mr. Farmer " on the Almost Famous soundtrack, but I checked out the band's 1966 self-titled debut LP on the recommendation of a friend, and it's pretty awesome. Here's the opening track from [...]
