This week, we're featuring music from Experimental Dental School. These guys aren't shy when it comes to guitar noise and shifts in time signature. Their venturous nature and punk energy makes them something to take notice of. We've also got music from the Extraordinaires: a band from Philadelphia with a knack for storytelling. And to top it all off, an interview with Man Man from New York City's Bowery Ballroom. The Needle Drop 04-19-08 Bonus question with Man Man Video referenced in [...]
Ah, Record Store Day! What a holiday! Some of my fondest memories involve Record Store Day: Getting up early in the morning to wake up my parents and head down to the local record store; buying Violent Femmes LPs with all the other children; singing the traditional Record Store Day carols; and going door-to-door with a sack to collect old hair metal cassettes from our friends and neighbors! Of course, we dressed like our favorite rock stars, and I remember Mrs. Sandlewood saying I had the most spot on Lou Reed impression for a 7-year-old. It [...]
Because of Not Brooklyn Fest which is this upcoming weekend, we will be extra prideful of the Connecticut music scene. One band playing this Friday, Call It Arson, has been a long time staple of the local scene. They are a talented four piece that carefully combines folk and punk. A good example is "The Unmanageable Superstate" from their Animal Strings EP, and available on their MySpace. Harmonica, acoustic guitar, and prideful lyrics blend in with a strong rocking tempo. Because the library I type these reviews often has loud talkers, my mind is a tad scrambled. The one thing I can figure out through the fugue and the fog is: Hot damn. Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds have done it again. The first song announces Dig!!! Lazarus Dig!!! will rock you. The eponymous song has the feeling of Louise Louise, where one senses the band having fun in the studio, with cowbells, strange keyboard oscillations, and those marvelous, detailed lyrics. Today's Lessons continue the leather jacket, smoke a pack James Dean cool. [...]
Without a doubt, Experimental Dental School has a name that describes their music better than any album review ever could, but why give up in the face of futility? They're a pop trio whose members are more interested in sounds than songs, and they might be the better for it. Despite the band's high energy, knack for awkward melodies, and ties to bands such as Melt Banana, they've remained a sort of well-kept secret. But their latest album could be something worth talking about outside the circles of experimental pop fans. Like a police lineup, the [...]
