Filed under: News Noel Vasquez, Getty Images Christopher Owens , the lead singer and co-founder of Girls , has decided to quit the indie rock band . The frontman broke the news via Twitter this morning, giving quite a shock to the San Francisco group's followers. "1) Dear all, This may come as a surprise to many & has been an issue of much thought for me. My decision was not easy to [...]

Yeah, so it's May, and we're still telling you about the albums we enjoyed last year. Maybe it's just taking us that long to get our heads around them. I feel rushed when December comes and I have to tell you how I feel about an album I bought five minutes ago. How should I know how I feel about it? I don't even know it yet. This is one of those albums that took some time to get to know. On one level, it's irrepressibly indie, the kind of thing made for the blogger/tumblr/twitter culture that celebrates songs that [...]

We'll continue today with our top 25 countdown with albums #15 through #11. #15: Destroyer - Kaputt Dan Bejar is somewhat off-putting at times. The super-literate and carving intellectual drive of his work with Destroyer and The New Pornographers , mixed with his Gordon Gano-like vocal renditions were a constant confinement [...]
It's the penultimate day of our top fifty countdown and there's an appearance for the highest rated Irish album, a surprisingly dramatic fall for the record that topped our mid-year poll and one of the music industry's old stagers making a superb return to form. Join us tomorrow for the top ten. Albums of 2011: 75-51 | 50-41 | 40-31 | 30-21 | 20-11 | 10-1 20. Oneohtrix Point Never - Replica [...]

31. Wild Flag - "Future Crimes" Few straight-on rock acts forced me to pay attention this year like Wild Flag (which features Carrie Brownstein and Janet Weiss of Sleater-Kinney.) This track in particular summons up the urgency & ferocity of the best of that legendary band. 32. Teen Daze - "The Harvest" - youtube This is from Teen Daze's 2011 concept album based on C.S. Lewis's Out Of The Silent Planet , and is also inspired by the time that Teen [...]
Christopher Owens didn't have an easy childhood. Growing up in the sect Children Of God, he did not only have to watch the perversities of the believers, but he also had to learn that his elder brother had died of pneumonia because the cult didn't allow him to go to a hospital. The past left [...]
This track is another surprise - Girls are a band known for their fuzzed-out pop tracks. This song, "Vomit" sounds more like they've been re-incarnated as Pink Floyd, in a VERY good way. This song builds and builds throughout, with a rock edge that they have not had in any of their previous music. Another track that caught my ear the first time I heard it and continues to get better with every listen. Side note: Be careful when typing in "Girls Vomit" into any search engine.... you probably won't like what you find.

Tenez, très récemment, je me suis surpris à me [...]

Girls - 'Father, Son And Holy Ghost' (UK Release: 12 Sept '11) // Words: Rajan Lakhani 'Father, Son And Holy Ghost' sees Girls truly exploring their ambitions, producing a near-masterpiece of an album. At nearly an hour in length and with many songs over the four-minute mark, this is a record that does demand the attention of the listener but it’s very hard to imagine there will be a more rewarding record released in 2011. [...]

True Panther / Matador Buy here It doesn’t seem so long ago I sat down and wrote a review for the debut album from San Francisco’s Girls. That album, called, Album, became an indie staple and cemented a place for Christopher Owens and Chet ‘JR’ White in playlists and music libraries everywhere. The follow-up EP Broken Dreams Club just left us waiting for more. Now, with the sophomore LP Father, Son, Holy Ghost, the boys from Girls have shown another side to their diverse breadth and range. [...]
This will come as a surprise to absolutely no one, but Rocks Off enjoys an adult beverage now and then. Sometimes we even enjoy more than one. And every once in a while we just might happen to... Continue reading "Ode To Recalled Turkey: Top 7 Songs About Puking" >

I don't even know where to begin, other than to say this: You need to listen to Girls' third record, Father, Son, Holy Ghost . It's got all the warm familiarity of great classic rock wrapped up in something that still sounds new and captivating. I'm posting the video for "Vomit," which was actually released over a month ago (better late than never, right?), but there's so much to love here: The surf-rock of "Honey Bunny," the Pink Floyd-inspired "My Ma" and "Forgiveness," the 70s arena rocker "Die," or the sweet, sad "Just a Song," which sounds like something [...]

Apologies for the bandwidth issues earlier. It's now sorted, so let's get to Monday Music while Monday just about remains: Girls – Vomit Oh, the epic and often-hideous search for love... [There is a video that cannot be displayed in this feed. Visit the blog entry to see the video.] Lia Ices – Daphne (Feat. Justin Vernon) For almost three minutes, this is a pain-bruised, shimmering Celtic folk slowie, [...]
